Gerani: Athens’ Forgotten Marketplace

Project details

Student Ismini Linthorst

Historically, Gerani served as the central marketplace of Athens as well as the reception point for newcomers to the city. By studying the spatial and social complexity of the area, this project aims to preserve the local commercial typologies of traditional small-scale businesses, whilst returning a civic dimension to the market and improving opportunities for integration of immigrant communities into wider society. Spaces, practices, and people that did not have a visible urban presence will gain a space to introduce themselves and coexist with the rest of the city.

With clear links to the central market and the city hall, a proposed sequence of vibrant markets and public spaces will help re-establish a connection to the city centre. Inspired by the spatial characteristics of each public space and how these are currently appropriated, three interventions are proposed along the street, in the arcade, and in the square. An international food bazaar will take place in Geraniou Street providing work opportunities to immigrants and inviting visitors into Gerani. A public arcade will become a common space for support. Finally, a carpark is changed into a public square surrounded by workshops, offering visibility and space for interaction and acceptance.

Public Square

The diverse inhabitation of the square will act as a statement, bringing the different social groups of Gerani actively together and giving them a podium to express different voices.

Geraniou Street Food Bazaar

The organisation of the food stalls is inspired by the existing shop and building typologies in the area, adapted to the specific needs of the food market and the environmental elements.

International Food Bazaar: Day and Night Appropriation

The act of dining encourages dialogue between diverse communities. Interventions that are not alien to the area’s spatial and social configuration protect its intimacy and existing processes.

The Character of the Immigrant Market

Immigrant businesses enrich the local market with goods from their countries of origin and products and services that target the immigrant community, with signs in different languages revealing their ethnicity.
