Duopolis is not a design proposal, nor a theoretical research. It is an imaginary, yet potentially realistic, visualised narrative. The urban narrative could take place in the present, the future, or the past. The purpose of the project is to explore how the value of architectural objects changes, depending on people’s habits and needs in each context. Taking as a starting point a pandemic, which, as Yuval Harari states, presses the fast-forward button on history, the story describes the social divisions that are shaped and reflected in architecture and the city.
Architecture has the simultaneous power to shape and to reflect peoples’ actions and hopes, becoming a tool and a mirror of its socio-political context. Apart from the main narrative, three imaginary citizens describe their everyday lives and thoughts. Illustrations capture the ambience of the city and the rhythm of its inhabitants’ lives, enriching, rather than just visualising, the course of the story.
