Linking Layers: Enabling a Coherent Strategy for Viewing and Celebrating the Many Historical Layers of Kemeralti
This project proposes a new layer of interventions in Kemeralti, creating opportunities for a museum route that can be adapted and continue to grow over time. This enables improved connectivity to the city centre, whilst also celebrating the importance of the area and exhibiting its unique architecture and craftsmanship. The proposed route highlights local architecture whilst reinforcing routes between existing landmarks and neighbourhoods of specialist craft.
The proposals examine three architectural conditions of Kemeralti: renovated buildings, neglected buildings, and ruins. The neglected structures and ruins are identified and adapted to reconnect the public with the ‘hidden’ structures of historical value in Kemeralti.
Within the wider master plan strategy, this project explores two points along the museum route in more detail. The first proposes to use the ruins of two abandoned synagogues to celebrate the significance of this unique site and improve connections between the Ancient Agora and the bazaar. The second focuses on a neglected Ottoman inn, enhancing the visibility of its existing heritage structures. The chosen location is on the north perimeter of the neighbour and aims to link Kemeralti with the city. The project enables a coherent strategy for viewing and celebrating the many historical layers of Kemeralti.
