The earthquake was catastrophic. This devastating power of nature tore up the town, however, it left an unplanned beauty in the ruin of Poggioreale. Ever since people moved out of the town, animals and vegetation became the only residents. Fifty years later, the ruin is full of the memory of this destruction, but also becomes full of surprises. The town seemed to freeze in 1968, yet the changes of the landscape tell the story of time flowing.
This proposal is to turn this ghost town into an Earthquake Museum. The project aims to make more people have the chance to experience an amazing site where ruins and vegetation, human history, and nature are coexisting after a disaster. When visitors arrive, they can enjoy the unique 1960s Sicilian folk architecture from an unexpected perspective. They can find traces and details of the past life from the debris of buildings and get to know more about the landscape of Sicily.
