The project aims to reveal the succession of vegetation, the weathering of materials over time, and different spatial experiences of the Sicilian landscape by inserting elements as tools of spatial reappropriation. Although Gibellina Nuova is famous for its art and utopian concept, local people are still unsatisfied with it. The existing urban environment needs to be revived by adding activities. Movable landscape elements can enable people to create their own unique personal space. Local residents are encouraged to join in the design of their town. The sculptures, seats, and plant containers move along a set track, creating shifting spaces. “Utopia is not a concept and theory, it is built by your hand, it grows from your heart.”

The change of vegetation is a long-term process. These vegetation strategies hope to make the wasteland flourish under artificial intervention, although rocky desertification also remains one of the diverse land types.
An existing plan (left) and proposed plan and sections (right). Although the town is known for its art and utopian concept, local people are still unsatisfied with it. The proposed landscape methods encourage residents to participate in the process of designing their hometown.
The sculptures, seats, and plant containers in the public square move along a set track, creating shifting spaces. People can also use the tools in the cabinet to create their own space with multiple functions.
