Integration of Active Bending in Freeform Developable Structures
This project investigates the potential of structural systems that combine developable fabrication with the structural prospects of 3D Graphic Statics. The use of active bending as a structural property aims to compensate additional loads and structural stability.
The process of connecting aggregated cells includes the following steps: a) identify coincident faces; b) identify coincident edges; c) for each coincident edge, find all associated faces; d) of those faces, identify which are coincident; e) identify which are non-coincidental; f) loft edges of coincident faces.
An illustration of the resulting perturbed subdivided mesh (bottom) and strip generation (top). When an edge, which corresponds to a strip, is selected, the non-coincidental faces that reside on the edge produce the external forces affecting the strip.
Exterior forces affecting the generated structure are identified (top) and determine the shear force acting on the developable strips (bottom).
An illustration of the simulated progression of the computational model’s reaction to the offset of applied forces. Identified exterior forces affecting the generated structure (top) determine the shear forces acting on the developable strips (bottom). Dark purple represents the most gradual change.
